Built to Last

The rain started on Monday, July 10 and didn’t let up for two days. In that time the storm dropped an historic amount of water on Central Vermont. Some towns reported up to 9 inches of rain in that time. Water topped the dams at Curtis Pond and at the Robinson Sawmill and washed out roads throughout the county. Water pounded through the mill and around the foundation. We watched nervously for several days and were so relieved when it finally began to recede. Amazingly, the damage to the mill was minimal. Some stones were loosened, timbers stored under the mill were swept away, and the planer shed had a sheet of mud on the floor.

But it appears that this mill – that has been standing since 1803, will live to run again. We will be conducting more extensive examinations of all the stones and foundation but our first impressions after the storm are that the mill is intact and mostly unscathed.
